CONCLUSION
Drawing from the analysis of scientific articles addressing the theme of third missions of universities published between 2021 and 2023, eight key research directions have emerged. These directions shed light on the interests of Russian-speaking authors in this field. The first among them pertains to the public engagement and overall social responsibility of universities. This trend entails actively involving students and the academic community in social and civic initiatives at local, national, and global levels. Public engagement is geared towards addressing societal challenges and fostering a positive impact on society.
The second trend underscores the significance of volunteerism, enabling universities to actively participate in socially impactful projects and initiatives, thereby enhancing the quality of life in their respective regions.
Another noteworthy trend involves the development of regions where universities act as catalysts for socio-economic progress. Through active collaboration with local enterprises, organizations, and authorities, universities endeavor to create hospitable environments for innovation, entrepreneurship, and workforce development within their regions.
The global transformation of higher education has a primary focus on innovation and entrepreneurship as integral components of implementing the third mission of universities. This trend seeks to cultivate and implement innovative methods and approaches to education, with a specific emphasis on nurturing entrepreneurial skills among students. Universities committed to advancing the third mission proactively engage with the business sector, industry, and society at large to stimulate innovation, incubate startups, and translate scientific breakthroughs into commercially successful products and services.
Digital transformation, too, occupies a pivotal role within the third mission of universities. As information technology and digital solutions advance rapidly, universities are keenly adopting contemporary educational practices, digital tools, and online learning perspectives to ensure the accessibility and quality of education for all students.
Interdisciplinarity and integration emerge as vital components of implementing the third mission of universities. The amalgamation of diverse disciplines, faculties, and research groups empowers universities to tackle intricate, interdisciplinary challenges and pioneer innovative solutions for contemporary issues.
Emphasizing the development of students’ personal growth and educational enrichment plays a pivotal role in nurturing intellectual, emotional, social, and professional skills among young professionals. The core aim of educational endeavors is to shape well-rounded individuals and equip graduates for seamless adaptation to modern society and flourishing professional careers.
Furthermore, university campuses are evolving into open spaces, not limited to educational and research activities, but also embracing a vibrant array of social and cultural events. Universities actively collaborate with civic organizations, businesses, and local residents, extending opportunities for partnerships, cooperation, and the mutual exchange of knowledge and experiences.
In light of these emerging trends, it becomes evident that the third mission of universities, though relatively nascent in the lexicon of Russian-speaking researchers, encompasses a broad spectrum of issues. These issues span both theoretical comprehension and practical application, with a focus on integrating the technologies and practices associated with the third mission into the fabric of regional social life, ultimately driving meaningful positive transformations.
