XXVI

Beside the well there was the ruin of an old stone wall.

Неподалеку от колодца сохранились развалины древней каменной стены.

When I came back from my work, the next evening, I saw from some distance away my little price sitting on top of a wall, with his feet dangling.

На другой вечер, покончив с работой, я вернулся туда и ещё издали увидел, что Маленький принц сидит на краю стены, свесив ноги.

And I heard him say:

И услышал его голос.

"Then you don't remember.

- Разве ты не помнишь? - говорил он.

This is not the exact spot."

- Это было совсем не здесь.

Another voice must have answered him, for he replied to it:

Наверно, кто-то ему отвечал, потому что он возразил:

"Yes, yes! It is the right day, but this is not the place."

- Ну да, это было ровно год назад, день в день, но только в другом месте...

I continued my walk toward the wall.

Я зашагал быстрее.

At no time did I see or hear anyone.

Но нигде у стены я больше никого не видел и не слышал.

The little prince, however, replied once again:

А между тем Маленький принц снова ответил кому-то:

" - Exactly.

- Ну конечно.

You will see where my track begins, in the sand.

Ты найдешь мои следы на песке.

You have nothing to do but wait for me there.

И тогда жди.

I shall be there tonight."

Сегодня ночью я туда приду.

I was only twenty meters from the wall, and I still saw nothing.

До стены оставалось двадцать метров, а я все ещё ничего не видел.

After a silence the little prince spoke again:

После недолгого молчания Маленький принц спросил:

"You have good poison?

- А у тебя хороший яд?

You are sure that it will not make me suffer too long?"

Ты не заставишь меня долго мучиться?

I stopped in my tracks, my heart torn asunder; but still I did not understand.

Я остановился, и сердце мое сжалось, но я все ещё не понимал.

"Now go away," said the little prince.

- Теперь уходи, - сказал Маленький принц.

"I want to get down from the wall."

- Я хочу спрыгнуть вниз.

I dropped my eyes, then, to the foot of the wall - and I leaped into the air.

Тогда я опустил глаза да так и подскочил!

There before me, facing the little prince, was one of those yellow snakes that take just thirty seconds to bring your life to an end.

У подножья стены, подняв голову к Маленькому принцу, свернулась желтая змейка, из тех, чей укус убивает в полминуты.

Even as I was digging into my pocked to get out my revolver I made a running step back. But, at the noise I made, the snake let himself flow easily across the sand like the dying spray of a fountain, and, in no apparent hurry, disappeared, with a light metallic sound, among the stones.

Нащупывая в кармане револьвер, я бегом бросился к ней, но при звуке шагов змейка тихо заструилась по песку, словно умирающий ручеек, и с еле слышным металлическим звоном неторопливо скрылась меж камней.

I reached the wall just in time to catch my little man in my arms; his face was white as snow.

Я подбежал к стене как раз вовремя и подхватил моего Маленького принца.

"What does this mean?"

Он был белее снега.

I demanded. "Why are you talking with snakes?"

- Что это тебе вздумалось, малыш! - воскликнул я.- Чего ради ты заводишь разговоры со змеями?

I had loosened the golden muffler that he always wore.

Я развязал его неизменный золотой шарф.

I had moistened his temples, and had given him some water to drink.

Смочил ему виски и заставил выпить воды.

And now I did not dare ask him any more questions.

Но не смел больше ни о чем спрашивать.

He looked at me very gravely, and put his arms around my neck.

Он серьезно посмотрел на меня и обвил мою шею руками.

I felt his heart beating like the heart of a dying bird, shot with someone's rifle...

Я услышал, как бьется его сердце, словно у подстреленной птицы.

"I am glad that you have found what was the matter with your engine," he said.

Он сказал: - Я рад, что ты нашёл, в чем там была беда с твоей машиной.

"Now you can go back home - "

Теперь ты можешь вернуться домой...

"How do you know about that?"

- Откуда ты знаешь?!

I was just coming to tell him that my work had been successful, beyond anything that I had dared to hope.

Я как раз собирался сказать ему, что, вопреки всем ожиданиям, мне удалось исправить самолет!

He made no answer to my question, but he added:

Он не ответил, он только сказал:

"I, too, am going back home today..."

- И я тоже сегодня вернусь домой.

Then, sadly -

Потом прибавил печально:

"It is much farther... It is much more difficult..."

- Это гораздо дальше... и гораздо труднее...

I realized clearly that something extraordinary was happening.

Все было как-то странно.

I was holding him close in my arms as if he were a little child; and yet it seemed to me that he was rushing headlong toward an abyss from which I could do nothing to restrain him...

Я крепко обнимал его, точно малого ребенка, и, однако, мне казалось, будто он ускользает, его затягивает бездна, и я не в силах его удержать...

His look was very serious, like some one lost far away.

Он задумчиво смотрел куда-то вдаль.

"I have your sheep.

- У меня останется твой барашек.

And I have the sheep's box.

И ящик для барашка.

And I have the muzzle..."

И намордник...

And he gave me a sad smile.

Он печально улыбнулся.

I waited a long time.

Я долго ждал.

I could see that he was reviving little by little.

Он словно бы приходил в себя.

"Dear little man," I said to him, "you are afraid..."

- Ты напугался, малыш...

He was afraid, there was no doubt about that.

Ну ещё бы не напугаться!

But he laughed lightly.

Но он тихонько засмеялся:

"I shall be much more afraid this evening..."

- Сегодня вечером мне будет куда страшнее...

Once again I felt myself frozen by the sense of something irreparable.

И опять меня оледенило предчувствие непоправимой беды.

And I knew that I could not bear the thought of never hearing that laughter any more.

Неужели, неужели я никогда больше не услышу, как он смеётся?

For me, it was like a spring of fresh water in the desert.

Этот смех для меня - точно родник в пустыне.

"Little man," I said, "I want to hear you laugh again."

- Малыш, я хочу ещё послушать, как ты смеёшься...

But he said to me:

Но он сказал:

"Tonight, it will be a year...

- Сегодня ночью исполнится год.

My star, then, can be found right above the place where I came to the Earth, a year ago..."

Моя звезда станет как раз над тем местом, где я упал год назад...

"Little man," I said, "tell me that it is only a bad dream - this affair of the snake, and the meeting-place, and the star..."

- Послушай, малыш, ведь все это - и змея, и свиданье со звездой - просто дурной сон, правда?

But he did not answer my plea.

Но он не ответил.

He said to me, instead: "The thing that is important is the thing that is not seen..."

- Самое главное - то, чего глазами не увидишь... -сказал он.

"Yes, I know..."

- Да, конечно...

"It is just as it is with the flower.

- Это как с цветком.

If you love a flower that lives on a star, it is sweet to look at the sky at night.

Если любишь цветок, что растет где-то на далекой звезде, хорошо ночью глядеть в небо.

All the stars are a-bloom with flowers..."

Все звезды расцветают.

"Yes, I know..."

- Да, конечно...

"It is just as it is with the water.

- Это как с водой.

Because of the pulley, and the rope, what you gave me to drink was like music.

Когда ты дал мне напиться, та вода была как музыка, а все из-за ворота и веревки.

You remember - how good it was."

Помнишь? Она была очень хорошая.

"Yes, I know..."

- Да, конечно...

"And at night you will look up at the stars.

- Ночью ты посмотришь на звезды.

Where I live everything is so small that I cannot show you where my star is to be found.

Моя звезда очень маленькая, я не могу её тебе показать.

It is better, like that.

Так лучше.

My star will just be one of the stars, for you.

Она будет для тебя просто - одна из звезд.

And so you will love to watch all the stars in the heavens... they will all be your friends.

И ты полюбишь смотреть на звезды... Все они станут тебе друзьями.

And, besides, I am going to make you a present..."

И потом, я тебе кое-что подарю...

He laughed again.

И он засмеялся.

"Ah, little prince, dear little prince! I love to hear that laughter!"

- Ах, малыш, малыш, как я люблю, когда ты смеёшься!

"That is my present.

- Вот это и есть мой подарок...

Just that. It will be as it was when we drank the water..."

Это будет как с водой...

"What are you trying to say?"

- Как так?

"All men have the stars," he answered, "but they are not the same things for different people. For some, who are travelers, the stars are guides.

- У каждого человека свои звезды. Одним - тем, кто странствует, - они указывают путь.

For others they are no more than little lights in the sky.

Для других это просто маленькие огоньки.

For others, who are scholars, they are problems.

Для ученых они - как задача, которую надо решить.

For my businessman they were wealth.

Для моего дельца они - золото.

But all these stars are silent.

Но для всех этих людей звезды - немые.

You - you alone - will have the stars as no one else has them - "

А у тебя будут совсем особенные звезды...

"What are you trying to say?"

- Как так?

"In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night...

- Ты посмотришь ночью на небо, а ведь там будет такая звезда, где я живу, где я смеюсь, - и ты услышишь, что все звезды смеются.

You - only you - will have stars that can laugh!"

У тебя будут звезды, которые умеют смеяться!

And he laughed again.

И он сам засмеялся.

"And when your sorrow is comforted (time soothes all sorrows) you will be content that you have known me.

- И когда ты утешишься - в конце концов всегда утешаешься, - ты будешь рад, что знал меня когда-то.

You will always be my friend.

Ты всегда будешь мне другом.

You will want to laugh with me.

Тебе захочется посмеяться со мною.

And you will sometimes open your window, so, for that pleasure...

Иной раз ты вот так распахнешь окно, и тебе будет приятно...

And your friends will be properly astonished to see you laughing as you look up at the sky!

И твои друзья станут удивляться, что ты смеёшься, глядя на небо.

Then you will say to them,

А ты им скажешь:

' Yes, the stars always make me laugh!'

"Да, да, я всегда смеюсь, глядя на звезды!"

And they will think you are crazy.

И они подумают, что ты сошел с ума.

It will be a very shabby trick that I shall have played on you..."

Вот какую злую шутку я с тобой сыграю...

And he laughed again.

Он опять засмеялся.

"It will be as if, in place of the stars, I had given you a great number of little bells that knew how to laugh..."

- Как будто вместо звезд я подарил тебе целую кучу смеющихся бубенцов...

And he laughed again.

И он опять засмеялся.

Then he quickly became serious:

Потом снова стал серьезен:

"Tonight - you know... Do not come."

- Знаешь... сегодня ночью... лучше не приходи.

"I shall not leave you," I said.

- Я тебя не оставлю.

"I shall look as if I were suffering.

- Тебе покажется, что мне больно.

I shall look a little as if I were dying.

Покажется даже, что я умираю.

It is like that.

Так уж оно бывает.

Do not come to see that. It is not worth the trouble..."

Не приходи, не надо.

"I shall not leave you."

- Я тебя не оставлю.

But he was worried.

Но он был чем-то озабочен.

"I tell you - it is also because of the snake.

- Видишь ли... это ещё из-за змеи.

He must not bite you.

Вдруг она тебя ужалит...

Snakes - they are malicious creatures.

Змеи ведь злые.

This one might bite you just for fun..."

Кого-нибудь ужалить для них удовольствие.

"I shall not leave you."

- Я тебя не оставлю.

But a thought came to reassure him:

Он вдруг успокоился:

"It is true that they have no more poison for a second bite."

- Правда, на двоих у неё не хватит яда...

That night I did not see him set out on his way.

В ту ночь я не заметил, как он ушел.

He got away from me without making a sound.

Он ускользнул неслышно.

When I succeeded in catching up with him he was walking along with a quick and resolute step.

Когда я наконец нагнал его, он шел быстрым, решительным шагом.

He said to me merely: "Ah! You are there..."

- А, это ты... - сказал он только.

And he took me by the hand.

И взял меня за руку.

But he was still worrying.

Но что-то его тревожило.

"It was wrong of you to come.

- Напрасно ты идешь со мной.

You will suffer.

Тебе будет больно на меня смотреть.

I shall look as if I were dead; and that will not be true..."

Тебе покажется, будто я умираю, но это неправда...

I said nothing.

Я молчал.

"You understand... it is too far.

- Видишь ли... это очень далеко.

I cannot carry this body with me.

Мое тело слишком тяжелое.

It is too heavy."

Мне его не унести.

I said nothing.

Я молчал.

"But it will be like an old abandoned shell.

- Но это все равно что сбросить старую оболочку.

There is nothing sad about old shells..."

Тут нет ничего печального...

I said nothing.

Я молчал.

He was a little discouraged.

Он немного пал духом.

But he made one more effort:

"You know, it will be very nice.
